Why They Used To Say Reading Is Fundamental

Society is on the brink of losing colorful language, as young people are learning to spell using text speech without punctuation of any kind. This language of acronyms teaching us nothing, and is resulting in a general decline in the number of words we can use. Only through reading does a young person gain a grasp of colorful language, and proper spelling and use of words.

To read is to learn new words, and new forms of illustrative language. With improvements in their ability to spell and comprehend information, they suddenly have an edge over many other students. It is sad that in this day of the information superhighway, we have adults who struggle to read a newspaper, yet they do not regard themselves as being illiterate.

Taking in a book on a rainy day can be like going on an adventure without ever leaving the room. Playing video games or watching television does not impact the creative imagination in a way that a good book can. Potential employers are not going to care what a young person watches or what games they play, but they will be effected by the presence of typographical errors on their resume.

When an adult reads, and their children see them doing so, or they read directly to their little ones, it creates an interest in this activity for their child. Not only do they wish to do what the adults are doing, but their desire to please their parents is very strong when they are small. Parents can use this desire to instill in their child a life-long love of books and learning.

Having excellent skills in grammar, punctuation, and spelling in this day and age can most certainly grant a young person an edge over their peers. Being able to read well makes learning easier and more enjoyable for anyone. When learning becomes second nature and constant, then the chances of a young person desiring to pursue further education is increased.

Even those who do not go to college experience the benefits of a basic love of learning that can only be instilled in a person who reads. A life rich in knowledge is a life full of opportunity, and we all respect these self made men and women who continue to show this lust for life long after their school years. Maintaining a love of learning throughout our life makes us happier and more fulfilled as adults.

The World Wide Web makes information available to anyone, on any topic, at any time day or night. Every man, woman, and child could be a self-made intellectual with this powerful tool at their fingertips. Unfortunately, most adults use this tool simply to indulge the most base of impulses by spending all their time absorbed in video games and pornographic material.

If this continues, we face becoming a society without writers, poets, or thinkers of any kind. The future generations have been spoon fed games that increase adrenaline rather than intelligence. It causes one who thinks to stop and ponder what sort of society will spring forward from the dredges of a society that put more importance on entertainment than education.
